*Golden Eagle Audubon Society Annual Banquet & Auction
The speaker will be DONALD KROODSMA, professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts. Mr. Kroodsma has studied birdsong for more than thirty years. He was recognized as the "reigning authority on avian vocal behavior" in the citation for his 2003 Elliott Coues Award from the American Ornithologists' Union.
He has edited three scholarly volumes on the field of acoustic communication among birds, and authored more than one hundred articles in both scholarly journals and popular magazines such as Auk, Condor, Birder's World, Living Bird, and Natural History. Kroodsma is a sought-after speaker on bird vocalizations.
We are going to try something new for desserts. Rather than auctioning whole pies, cakes and cookies, we will have a dessert table and will sell each serving of pie, cake, cookies or cupcakes for $5.00. You will be able to purchase your choice when you arrive at the banquet and then take it to your table. So, if you want a piece of Suzanne’s chocolate decadence or Susan’s cheese cake or Sandy’s cookies, better get there early for your first choice. Please call Hope Denney (375-7207) if you can donate a dessert for the Banquet.

Because Flammulated owls are a relatively poorly known species, Keith will also present findings on the general ecology and detectability of these owls.
Come and enjoy this interesting presentation by Keith and partake of some delicious refreshments.

*Snowshoe Classes
Anyone who would like to learn the winter sport of snowshoeing is encouraged to sign up for the one-credit class, Snowshoeing (PHYE 199 C12) at the College of Southern Idaho this semester.
Instructor Sandra Bosteder says the goal of this course is to introduce students to the lifelong physical activity and enjoyment of snowshoeing. She says the class will appeal to hiking enthusiasts who want to stay active and outdoor through the winter.
Snowshoeing itself is easy, Bosteder says. “If you can walk, you can snowshoe.” The class will also cover winter survival and preparation skills and help keep snowshoers out of danger from venturing out alone in unfamiliar territory or into avalanche prone areas. She stresses that safety techniques discussed in the class are minimal and will not provide the skills necessary for snowshoeing on your own.
Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays from Jan. 19 to March 8. Sessions will take place at snowshoe sites within the Magic Valley. The first and last week’s sessions will take place in the CSI gym. Students are responsible for their own transportation and providing snowshoes they rent or buy for themselves.
For more information, contact Bosteder at 732-6300 or at sbosteder@csi.edu

*Total Lunar Eclipse
Local sky watchers and staff at the Herrett Center’s Centennial Observatory are hoping for clear skies the evening of Wednesday, February 20. That will be the evening of a total eclipse of the moon that will be visible in Idaho.
Chris Anderson, manager of the observatory, says while there are two lunar eclipse seasons each year – about six months apart – many of them are either not visible at all to certain parts of the world or they pass almost without notice. The next total lunar eclipse visible from Idaho will occur on June 15, 2011. A partial, or penumbral, eclipse will occur on Aug. 16 of this year but will not be visible in Idaho. Two more will occur next year on Feb. 9 and July 7, but Anderson says they will be so slight that most people won’t notice them.
The Centennial Observatory at the Herrett Center for Arts and Science will be open the evening of Feb. 20 for people to watch as the moon rises at 6:06 p.m. The darkest phase of the eclipse will begin at 6:43 and end at 10:08. Mid-eclipse is at 8:26 p.m. Viewing will be free of charge.

*The Tennessee Three: Johnny Cash''s Legendary Band – Presented by Arts on Tour
The Tennessee Three began as the backing band for legendary country music and rock-a-billy singer Johnny Cash. They toured and recorded with Cash for over 40 years, until his semi-retirement in 1997. A live performance by The Tennessee Three is unlike any other in the history of music. They are not a "tribute act" or "cover band". They are original men who provided the unique sound that powered nearly every Johnny Cash stage show and recording since 1960. With its current lineup, they carry on the tradition, featuring guitarist Bob Wootton on vocals and W.S. Holland on drums. Their live shows attract a growing number of fans eager to experience the excitement of the sound defined by The Tennessee Three. In 2006, the group released a tribute album to Johnny Cash titled The Sound Must Go On. You can learn more about The Tennessee Three by visiting their website at www.tennesseethree.com.

You are invited to a free public seminar on the Natural History and Conservation of the Orange-breasted Falcon which will be given by Robert B. Berry, Co-Founder and Director of The Peregrine Fund. The seminar will be held at the World Center for Birds of Prey.
The seminar is richly illustrated by images of the species’ life history with a minimum of maps and tables, including its status, habitat, threats, foraging behavior, prey base and reproduction. Also included are conservation and research, captive propagation, and the first ever experimental release of captive bred Orange-breasted Falcons in Belize in 2007.
Bob Berry was a first-hand witness to the extinction of the Eastern Anatum Peregrine Falcon in the 1950s and ‘60s, which had a profound influence on his life’s work in conservation. A falconer from the age of 10, Bob began experimenting with captive propagation of Peregrine
Falcons in 1964 and helped found The Peregrine Fund in 1970. He did pioneering work with behaviorally conditioned raptors and has successfully propagated all of the species he has worked with, including Goshawks, Peregrine Falcons, Gyrfalcons, Ornate Hawk Eagles, Teita Falcons, and Orange-breasted Falcons. Bob is the founding President of the North American Raptor Breeder’s Association. *“Rafting the Grand Canyon” – Presented by Idaho Alpine Club
Rob Thornberry and Martin Moore recently spent 18 days ushering a raft down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. They put in at Lee's Ferry in late season on October 24, 2007 and took out at Diamond Creek on November 10, 2007. This meant their party of 4 rafts and 2 kayaks had shorter days and longer nights than they would have experienced during the height of the summer season, but they were rewarded with increased solitude because of fewer people on the river. The trip was a "do it yourself trip". Rob, the outdoor editor for the Post Register for the last 17 years, and Martin, a CH2M-WG Idaho LLC employee, along with the rest of their party, had to plan the trip themselves; from obtaining the rafts and organizing the equipment to planning the food and cooking their meals. Through their slides, Rob and Martin will convey the beauty and excitement of rafting the Grand Canyon so come and enjoy.
The meeting is open to the public. All outdoor enthusiasts are invited to attend.More Info

*CSI Theatre Department Presents: The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail
In 1846, Henry David Thoreau spent a night in jail for refusing to pay his taxes as a way to protest the United States’ involvement in the Mexican War. Playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee (Inherit the Wind) take this incident and spin it into an interesting and very provocative drama that weaves dream sequences in and out of the past and present as Thoreau serves out his short sentence, giving us a very intimate look at what Thoreau’s mindset might have been, even before he penned his own reflections on Civil Disobedience.

*Idaho Alpine Club General Meeting - "Rowing to Alaska"
Pete Oslund was an avid climber when he severely injured his legs in a fall while doing repairs on the roof of his church. Unfortunately, he had to give up climbing and find a new pursuit. Casting about for a new activity, he took up kayaking- but in a big way. He designed and built a wooden kayak and fitted it with oarlocks and proceeded to row it 1200 miles from Bellingham, WA to Sitka, AK over the course of two summers. He rowed on the rainy days as well as the sunny ones and camped on the shoreline wherever his day ended, sometimes in places frequented by grizzly bears. What is most inspiring about Pete is that he rowed to Alaska at an age when many of us would choose to cruise the world on a comfortable recliner encamped in front of a TV. So come and enjoy Pete's slide show of this memorable trip.
The meeting is open to the public. All outdoor enthusiasts are invited to attend.

*"Woodstock" at the Herrett Center
Students in the College of Southern Idaho’s Cabinetmaking and Welding programs have scheduled their 18th annual Christmas show and auction, “Woodstock,” Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8 in the Rick Allen Community Room at the Herrett Center for Arts and Science.
Woodstock Club president Marian Frix says students from each club have increased their efforts to provide more and even finer quality works in this year’s show than in the past. For the first time, CSI Culinary Arts students will also join the event, selling specially made treats and refreshments during the viewing and auction portions of the event. They will also have elaborate gingerbread houses for sale.
More than 20 large wooden items will be displayed and sold, including an 1890 style covered wagon bench, a maple executive desk, mahogany and cedar hope chests, an oak mission style table and end tables, mahogany and red oak poker table, and a bed frame crafted from logs of mountain mahogany. There will be gun cases, armoires, chests of drawers, apothecary, and fireplace mantle. Smaller items such as fruit bowls, game and cutting boards, some made of very exotic wood such as purple heart, will be displayed and sold. Welding students will be displaying decorative art works and other metal cut-outs, coat racks, and trailer hitch covers. Money raised from the event will help the students attend next spring’s Homebuilders Show in Orlando.
The public is encouraged to visit the display from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 in the Herrett Center’s Rick Allen Community room. Additional viewing will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Bidding begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

*Mammoths in the Mountain West
Dr. Larry Agenbroad, one of the world’s leading experts on prehistoric mammoths, will be the featured speaker at this month’s Herrett Forum at the Herrett Center for Arts and Science. His topic will be “Mammoths in the Mountain West.” The event is free and open to the public and will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Agenbroad is perhaps best known outside the scientific community for the leading role he took in raising the remains of a frozen mammoth from the Siberian tundra several years ago. The project was featured in a Discovery Channel documentary. Since 1966, he has actively researched the Quaternary Period, from 2-million years ago to the present. His research in geology, archaeology, hydrology, and paleontology are widely regarded in the science community. Agenbroad’s discussion will center on the mammoths that are known to have lived in the mountain west, including right here in southern Idaho, based on remains that have been found below the Perrine Bridge.

*Arts on Tour: Music from the Crooked Road
"Winding for over 200 miles across the mountains, ridges and valleys of southwestern Virginia, the Crooked Road passes through some of the most musical places on earth. For generations, the tiny rural Appalachian communities scattered along its length have produced an abundance of extraordinary traditional musicians. Keepers of an historic musical legacy from colonial times, they have created and passed on old-time, bluegrass and mountain gospel sounds that have profoundly influenced the development of American music. The Music From the Crooked Road tour celebrates the living musical culture of this region, which today not only survives, but thrives. This is a national tour showcasing the best the region has to offer: Sammy Shelor - banjo virtuoso, Wayne Henderson - National Heritage Fellow Appalachian guitar master, The Whitetop Mountain Band - Southwest Virginia's most popular family string band, Kirk Sutphin & Eddie Bond - old-time fiddle and banjo at its best, No Speed Limit – a hot young bluegrass band, and Elizabeth LaPrelle - extraordinary keeper of mountain ballads and songs."
You can learn more about these artists by visiting http://www.ncta.net/
Ticket prices: $36/adults, $23/children
